Body Mass Index Chart For Women. When you hear about Body Mass Index also known as BMI the first thing that would come into your mind is that it has something to do with a medical tool that interprets a particular health condition.  Truth is, the firsthand guess is somewhat true and on the other hand is false. Let me first define what BMI is, it is some sort of a chart used to identify if a person is in fact underweight or overweight based on a specific formula.  In reality there is actually no such thing as BMI chart for women, because the same formula is being used for men, women and teens, the same principle and the same formula.

Body Mass Index Chart For Women

The idea about it is to clearly identify if a persons weight (in this case women) is relative to her height and age, any irregularities may suggest something out of norm for a healthy person.  But how do we really come up with the results? It's really simple you just have to divide the person's weight by height in meters, squared (BMI=kg/m2).  In order to make it easier to calculate, there are variations being entered to the chart for women.  However the chart can only be used for an individual at least 58 inches tall and not less than 91 pounds.

To better understand how the chart works, let me show you an example.  Below is the chart for which we can see our BMI results accurately without doing too much math.  On the first column, you can find your height ten move across to match your weight (the pounds have been rounded off), then the topmost row will tell you your BMI value.

Question, what does the BMI value suggests? , and what importance do I need to consider based on the chart results?

Researchers on Obesity proved that the BMI measurements can be used to assess the person level of body fats based on the chat and weight, age is also being eyed on in determining abnormalities in a person's condition.

Try to think of it, if your height is about 5 ft 2 inches, and you are weighing about 140 lbs. the BMI value will come out as 25.6, which according to the chart is overweight.  The normal value should range from 102-137 lbs. only for a person at that height.  On the other hand the normal value should only read as 21.95 on BMI scale and the ideal weight should be 120 lbs.

So, what does the data suggests? , it goes to show that if your BMI reading went over or under the scale, you are not in good shape and thus, a need for immediate action should be taken into consideration, its either begin to take in more nutritional elements or take on a diet.  The chart is useful in a way that we could tell ourselves if we are healthy or not and the best way to keep you on the proper scale is to make sure that you are taking good care of yourself and be very careful with what we put into our body, we should bare in mind that we could be the doctor of our own selves and just like anybody else's say "a ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure".  Stay in shape everyone.

The Body mass index (BMI) is very commonly used worldwide to determine the weight status of a person. Though it is not accurate, it gives a good indication whether a person is underweight, normal, overweight or obese. The BMI of an individual is calculated by taking two measurements: the weight in kilograms of the individual and the height in meters. In order to calculate your body mass index, all you have to do is to use the following formula:

BMI = Weight in pounds / (Height in inches)2. You then multiply the result obtained by 703 which is a conversion factor. For example, a person weighs 140 pounds and is 65 inches tall, his or her BMI will be [140/(65x65)] x 703 which is equals to 23.29.

BMI can be calculated either using the BMI formula or the BMI calculator. You should be aware that the BMI calculator is used for evaluating weight status of adults and not children. Once the BMI is determined, the result is compared with the BMI chart. Women often wonder if they should use the same body mass index as men. The body mass index chart for women is similar to the body mass index chart used for men and teens. Thus there is no specific body mass index chart for women as BMI is neither gender nor ethic specific. You will find below, the body mass index chart for women that can be also be used by any person who is at least 145 cm tall and weighs at least 45.5 kilograms.

Obese or morbidly obese

Based on the BMI chart, it is estimated that about two-thirds of the adults living in America are overweight. What is even more alarming is that one out of seven children or adolescent are overweight in the United States. Child obesity is a matter of serious concern in America and because of their obesity; children are having diseases which normally occur in adults.

It is important that a person knows his or her BMI for his or her own health sake. Obese or overweight people have increased risks of developing diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke, blocked arteries, type 2 diabetes, arteriosclerosis, high level of cholesterol in blood termed as hyperlimia, fatty liver disease etc. Moreover, obese or overweight people often suffer from lower back ache and osteoarthritis. The health risks become even more significant in morbidly obese persons. A person is said to be morbidly obese if he or she has a body mass index beyond 40 and weighs 50 kilograms in excess of his or her ideal body weight. Such a person should be treated as being ill according to the National Institutes of Health.

Though BMI is a useful tool in evaluating your weight status, it does have a few limitations. BMI does not take into account muscle mass. Therefore it can overestimate fat in persons who are heavily muscles such as athletes or body builders although they don't have a high proportion of body fat. Furthermore, it does not distinguish between lean body mass and body fat. Another limitation of BMI is that it can underestimate fat in individuals who have low muscle mass.
